JOHANNESBURG--South Africa's unemployment rate fell to 26.5% in the fourth quarter from 27.1% in the previous three months, the country's statistics office said Tuesday.

Employment went up in all sectors of the economy, including informal ones, the office said. The biggest increase was recorded in the agricultural sector, where 38,000 new jobs were created in the three months to December.

However, despite the quarter-on-quarter improvement, unemployment is still two percentage points higher than a year ago.
